These are not the small German cockroaches associated with dirty apartments in northern cities. Palmetto bugs are large — up to two inches long — reddish-brown, and they can fly. They are extremely common outdoors throughout the entire Charleston area and will occasionally wander inside, especially during summer heat or dry spells. The important thing to understand is that finding one or two is completely normal in the Lowcountry and does not mean your home is dirty or infested. However, seeing them regularly indoors signals that a professional exterior barrier treatment is needed. Fire Ants
Surprise Level: HighIf you've never lived in the Southeast, fire ants will be one of your biggest adjustments. Their mounds — dome-shaped dirt piles that can appear anywhere in open turf — look harmless until you accidentally disturb one. Fire ants respond to disturbance instantly and aggressively, swarming and stinging repeatedly. Their stings cause an immediate burning sensation (hence the name) followed by white pustules that develop over 24–48 hours. For most people the stings are painful but not dangerous. However, those with allergies can experience severe anaphylactic reactions. Keep children and pets away from any mound until it's been treated professionally. In the Charleston area — particularly in neighborhoods like Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, and Summerville's newer subdivisions — fire ant mounds are a consistent presence without ongoing quarterly treatment.
Mosquitoes
Surprise Level: HighEven people moving from other southern states are often surprised by the mosquito pressure in the Lowcountry. The primary pest species in the Charleston area is the Asian Tiger Mosquito — a daytime biter with black and white stripes that can breed in as little as a teaspoon of standing water. Unlike the mostly-at-dusk mosquitoes you may be used to, this species is active all day long, which means outdoor activities like gardening, playing with kids, or sitting on the porch can be uncomfortable without protection from April through October. The combination of warm temperatures, high humidity, and the Lowcountry's abundant water features — tidal creeks, retention ponds, drainage ditches — creates near-ideal conditions. Silverfish & Centipedes
Surprise Level: MediumSilverfish — small, silver, fish-shaped insects — thrive in Charleston's humidity and are commonly found in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and storage areas. They're harmless but unsettling. House centipedes, which can have up to 30 legs and move extremely fast, are also a common Lowcountry sight. Lawn Weeds — Especially Dollarweed
